Scholarships for Nepali Students in 2026: What’s Real, What’s Not, and How to Actually Get One

“Do I have a chance of getting a scholarship? (मलाई छात्रवृत्ति पाउने अवसर छ?)”

The honest answer? It depends. And the reason most students don’t get scholarships isn’t because scholarships don’t exist. It’s because they don’t know where to look, or they apply too late, or they don’t present themselves well enough on paper.

Let’s fix that today. Here’s a no-nonsense guide to scholarships that actually exist for Nepali students in 2026  not the “100% scholarship guaranteed” scams you see on Facebook.

The Big Government Scholarships

1. Chevening Scholarship (UK) — Fully Funded

This is the gold standard. The UK government’s flagship scholarship covers full tuition at any UK university, monthly living allowance of approximately £1,300, return airfare from Nepal, and arrival costs. It’s for one-year Master’s degrees.

Who qualifies: You need at least 2 years (2,800 hours) of work experience after your undergraduate degree, and you must commit to returning to Nepal for at least 2 years after completing your studies. Applications typically open in August each year.

Reality check: Chevening is extremely competitive. But students from Nepal do get it every year. If you have strong academics, clear leadership experience, and a genuine plan to contribute to Nepal after your studies, it’s worth applying.

2. Australia Awards — Fully Funded

The Australian government invests approximately AUD 200 million per year in scholarship programmes for international students. Australia Awards cover tuition, living expenses, health cover, and airfare. They’re available for Master’s and PhD programs.

Best for: Students interested in development-related fields ( public health, education, governance, agriculture, economics). If your career plan connects to Nepal’s development, this is a strong fit.

3. Fulbright Program (USA) — Fully Funded

For Master’s and PhD programs in the United States. Covers tuition, health insurance, living costs, and airfare. Extremely prestigious  and yes, Nepali students are eligible.

4. GREAT Scholarship Nepal (UK) — £10,000

A co-funded award between the UK government and participating universities. Worth £10,000 toward tuition for Nepali students at selected UK universities in specific subject areas. Less competitive than Chevening, and a great option if you don’t have 2 years of work experience yet.

5. Commonwealth Scholarships — Fully Funded

For Master’s and PhD students from Commonwealth countries (Nepal qualifies). Covers tuition, living expenses, and airfare. Focused on students who will contribute to development in their home countries.

University-Level Scholarships (The Ones Most Students Miss)

Here’s where the real opportunity is that most Nepali students overlook. Almost every major university in Australia, UK, Canada, and the US offers its own scholarships for international students. These range from £1,000 to £5,000 partial tuition waivers all the way up to 50–100% tuition scholarships.

The catch? You have to actively search for them, meet specific deadlines, and write separate applications. Most students don’t bother, which means less competition for those who do.

What we do at Right Educational Services: When we shortlist universities for you, we don’t just look at courses and fees. We check every university’s current scholarship offerings, deadlines, and eligibility criteria. Sometimes a university that looks more expensive on paper becomes cheaper than the “budget” option once you factor in their automatic merit scholarship.

The “100% Scholarship” Scam

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. If any consultancy guarantees you a “100% scholarship,” run. Not walk. Run.

Government scholarships are decided by government bodies, not consultancies. University scholarships are decided by university admissions committees. No consultancy in Birtamode, Kathmandu, or anywhere can guarantee you a scholarship because they don’t control the selection process.

What a good consultancy can do is help you identify scholarships you’re eligible for, prepare strong applications, write compelling personal statements, and meet deadlines. That’s exactly what we do. But we will never promise what we can’t deliver.

How to Actually Improve Your Scholarship Chances

  • Start early. Most major scholarships have deadlines 6–12 months before the intake. If you’re planning for January 2027, you should be researching scholarships right now.
  • Build work experience. Chevening and many university scholarships value professional experience. Even 1–2 years of relevant work after your Bachelor’s makes a difference.
  • Write YOUR story. Scholarship committees read thousands of generic statements. What makes yours different? Your background in Jhapa, your specific challenges, your concrete plans for Nepal,  that’s what stands out.
  • Maintain strong academics. A 3.0+ GPA (or equivalent) opens doors that lower grades simply don’t.
  • Apply to multiple scholarships simultaneously. Don’t put all your hopes on one. We typically recommend students apply to 3–5 scholarships alongside their university applications.
  • Get your IELTS/PTE score sorted first. Many scholarships require a minimum English test score just to apply. Don’t waste a scholarship deadline because your test score isn’t ready.

“The students who get scholarships aren’t always the ones with the highest marks. They’re the ones who planned early, told their story well, and applied to the right scholarships. We’ve helped students from right here in Jhapa win university scholarships worth lakhs. It starts with a conversation.”— Right Educational Services, Birtamode
